Abu Dhabi-backed Marlan Space will fund a 50-satellite constellation built with Loft Orbital, using Mistral AI software and Nvidia processors to analyse data before it reaches Earth.

A UAE-backed company is investing $1 billion in a constellation of 50 artificial intelligence-enabled satellites, extending Abu Dhabi’s technology ambitions beyond data centres and software into commercial space infrastructure.

Marlan Space, an affiliate of Abu Dhabi-listed International Holding Company, will finance the satellites and launch programme for French-American space company Loft Orbital. The spacecraft will be assembled in Abu Dhabi by Orbitworks, a joint venture established by Marlan Space and Loft Orbital in 2024.

The proposed constellation will process images and other sensor data aboard the satellites instead of sending every raw file to a ground station for analysis. AI models supplied by France’s Mistral AI will run on Nvidia computing hardware, according to reporting by Le Monde and Reuters.

The partners say this could allow the network to identify events and send alerts within seconds. Potential applications include detecting wildfires, tracking vessels, monitoring ports and energy facilities, and identifying changes around other critical infrastructure.

The project is significant for the UAE because it links three areas in which Abu Dhabi is investing heavily: artificial intelligence, satellite manufacturing and sovereign data capabilities.

However, many commercial details remain undisclosed. The companies have not publicly identified their government customers, provided a revenue forecast or published a complete launch timetable for all 50 satellites.

Processing data before it reaches Earth

Traditional observation satellites collect images and measurements before transmitting large volumes of information to ground stations. Analysts or cloud-computing systems then process the data.

That approach can create delays, particularly when the satellite is outside the range of a suitable ground station or when large files must be transmitted.

The proposed system moves part of the analysis into orbit. Software aboard the satellite can examine the data, identify a relevant event and transmit a smaller alert or selected image to the customer.

Pierre-Damien Vaujour, co-founder and chief executive of Loft Orbital, gave the example of an infrared camera detecting a potential wildfire. An onboard AI agent could identify a heat source and send its coordinates directly to the relevant authorities.

The same approach could be applied to maritime and infrastructure monitoring. Customers might request an alert when an unidentified vessel enters a defined coastal area or when unusual activity appears near an airport, railway, power plant or telecommunications site.

The speed advantage could be valuable for emergency response, environmental monitoring and commercial logistics. It could also support security and defence operations, making governance and customer controls particularly important.

Loft Orbital told Le Monde that “contracts have already been signed with several government entities in France and the Emirates,” although it did not name the organisations or disclose their values.

Satellites to be assembled in Abu Dhabi

The $1 billion will fund the purchase and launch of the 50 satellites over approximately three years, according to Le Monde.

Assembly will take place in Abu Dhabi through Orbitworks. The joint venture was formed to manufacture and integrate satellites in the UAE, giving the country a larger role in the space-industry supply chain.

The first spacecraft has reportedly been assembled and is scheduled for launch into low Earth orbit in October 2026 aboard a SpaceX rocket. Nine additional satellites are planned for launch during 2027.

The partners intend to consider launches using MaiaSpace, a subsidiary of Europe’s ArianeGroup, once its reusable launch vehicle becomes commercially available. Le Monde reported that this could happen from 2028, although development schedules in the launch industry frequently change.

The project therefore remains dependent on foreign launch providers even though the satellites will be assembled in the UAE.

This illustrates the difference between building a domestic space-manufacturing capability and controlling the full supply chain. Satellite components, advanced processors, AI models, launch services and regulatory approvals may come from several countries.

For Abu Dhabi, the commercial opportunity lies in becoming the place where those elements are integrated into a finished satellite system.

Mistral and Nvidia form the AI layer

Mistral AI is expected to provide the models used to process information in orbit, while Nvidia will supply the computing chips.

Running AI aboard a satellite presents different technical constraints from operating it in a terrestrial data centre. Spacecraft have limited power, cooling and communications capacity, while radiation and extreme temperatures can affect electronic systems.

Models must therefore be efficient enough to operate within strict hardware limits. They also need to distinguish genuine events from sensor errors, cloud cover and other misleading signals.

An incorrect alert about a fire may waste emergency resources. In a security context, a false identification could carry much more serious consequences.

The companies have not published technical specifications for the models, sensors or Nvidia processors intended for the constellation. Independent information about accuracy, failure rates and cybersecurity safeguards is also not yet available.

Claims about near-real-time performance should consequently be treated as project objectives until the satellites are operating and customers can evaluate the service.

UAE investment reaches further into European technology

The satellite deal follows a broader expansion of UAE investment in European technology and infrastructure.

In February 2025, the UAE and France announced a framework for an AI data-centre project with planned investment of between $30 billion and $50 billion. The partnership covered data centres, advanced chips, research, talent development and sovereign cloud infrastructure.

The new space project is smaller in financial terms but more clearly defined. It connects Emirati capital and manufacturing with a French AI developer, a French-American satellite company, US-designed processors and international launch providers.

It also arrives as governments become increasingly concerned about dependence on a limited number of foreign technology suppliers.

Europe wants greater control over its digital and space infrastructure, while the UAE is seeking access to advanced technology and international markets. Cooperation allows both sides to share costs and capabilities, although questions over jurisdiction and data control remain.

Because the satellites may perform sensitive monitoring, the constellation will reportedly be managed by a French-registered company subject to French and European regulations. Services are initially intended for French, European and Emirati customers.

That structure means the UAE is financing and manufacturing the hardware without necessarily holding exclusive authority over its operations.

Potential value for Dubai and the wider UAE

Although the manufacturing operation is based in Abu Dhabi, the commercial uses could extend across the UAE.

Dubai’s economy depends on ports, aviation, logistics, real estate and international trade. Faster satellite analysis could support vessel monitoring, infrastructure inspections, environmental assessment and emergency response.

For financial institutions, satellite data can also become an economic input.

Banks and insurers may use verified observations to assess damage after floods or fires, monitor construction projects, examine supply-chain interruptions or evaluate agricultural and infrastructure assets. Commodity traders can use satellite information to estimate storage levels and industrial activity.

The financial value depends on reliability. A system must provide information that is accurate, timely and legally usable before companies will rely on it for lending, insurance or investment decisions.

Clear rules will also be needed for privacy, surveillance, data ownership and access. The ability to monitor vehicles, ships and critical facilities at scale creates obvious security benefits but also introduces potential for misuse.

Execution will determine the project’s value

The $1 billion commitment gives the planned constellation substantial financial support, while the involvement of Loft Orbital, Mistral AI and Nvidia brings recognised technology providers into the project.

The next milestones will be more important than the announcement itself.

Investors should watch whether the first satellite launches as planned in October, whether the nine scheduled for 2027 remain on time, and whether the partners disclose paying customers and measurable performance results.

The UAE has already established itself as a major buyer and financier of artificial intelligence. Orbitworks gives it an opportunity to become a manufacturer and exporter of AI-enabled infrastructure as well.

If the constellation delivers reliable onboard analysis at commercial scale, Abu Dhabi could gain a meaningful position in the emerging market for space-based intelligence. Until operational results are available, its speed, accuracy and financial returns remain to be proven.
